Swimsuit season is nearly upon us, and unfortunately that means some of us are trying to shed the extra cushioning we’ve gained over the cozy, food-filled winter months. While hitting the gym or going on a run with your sweetheart can be fun, working out in a group adds a new competitive element that can help you up your game — and meet new people to boot.
Looking to get your sweat on in a new setting without spending a cent? Here are eight workouts in the Toledo area that are free (or close enough).
Enroll in a Free 5K Training Series
Becoming a runner can be intimidating, but Toledo Metroparks wants to get you on your feet and onto the trails. This free training series includes group runs and walks that will build your strength and stamina over the course of 10 weeks, and culminates with the Happy Trails 5K Race on June 11 at the Wildwood Preserve. Training starts in April, and you can sign up for sessions here.
Free Yoga at Eddie Bauer Second Saturday of Every Month
Flow your way into a sweat at this free yoga class. At 9 am on the second Saturday of every month, Christine Senack, a seasoned yoga professional, teaches a Vinyasa Ashtanga class open to all levels. You’ll learn new postures and breathing techniques, and can hit the mall for some weekend deals after the final shavasana. Find her schedule here.
Go on a Group Run with the Toledo Roadrunners
The Toledo Roadrunners have been hitting the pavement for more than 30 years, and have grown to be the largest and most organized running group in the Toledo area. New runners are always welcome regardless of ability — distances range from short jogs for beginners to intense marathon training sessions. Drop in for a group run or two, and test your abilities at the weekend races. The cost of membership is just $20 annually, and gets you access to all group events and discounts or free entry at local races.
Try a WOD for Free at Glass City Crossfit
If you haven’t hopped on the wagon and tried Crossfit, now might be the best time to get involved. Glass City Crossfit offers a free session and consultation to all Crossfit noobs, so you can see what it’s about (and get your swoll on) before committing.
