Celebrating New Homeowners Day: Essential Reminders for Your Move

It’s an exhilarating moment the very first time you unlock the door to your new home. If you’ve recently closed or are preparing for your move, New Homeowners Day is the perfect opportunity to celebrate this milestone and set yourself up for success.

Moving comes with a long list of to-dos, and it’s easy to overlook a few important steps in all the excitement. To help you stay on track, here’s a list of essential reminders every new homeowner should tackle as soon as possible.

1. transfer utilities

Before move-in day, make sure your utilities—electricity, gas, water, trash collection, and internet—are transferred into your name or scheduled for activation. You don’t want to arrive at your new home to discover you’ve been disconnected. Try to call providers a week in advance to ensure everything is ready for your first day.

2. update your mailing address

Don’t miss important bills, packages, or notices. Submit a change of address form through the United States Postal Service online or at your local post office. Also, update your address with banks, insurance companies, employers, subscription services, and anyone else who will need your new location.

3. change the locks and garage code

You never know who still has access to your home. Schedule a locksmith to change all exterior locks shortly after closing, and don’t forget to reset garage keypads. This simple step can give you peace of mind that your property is secure.

4. save important documents

Keep a copy of your purchase and closing documents in a safe, easily accessible place. This should also include warranties, appliance manuals, and active service contracts. You never know when you’ll need to reference them for repairs, renovations, or future sales. Scan copies to save digitally as well—cloud storage can be a lifesaver if the paperwork gets lost or damaged.

5. familiarize yourself with shut-offs

Find and label the main water shut-off valve, electrical breaker box, and gas shut-off. Knowing where these are and how to use them is crucial for emergency situations.

New Homeowners Day isn’t just about unpacking boxes—it’s about setting the foundation for a safe, organized, and happy life in your new space. Knocking out these tasks at the start of your transition allows you to focus on getting settled and making new memories!
