Fremont is a small town with an impressive history. For over two centuries, it has been the county seat of Ohio’s Sandusky County. The city played a pivotal role in the War of 1812 when Americans were victorious in the Battle of Fort Stephenson.

Throughout the 1800s, Fremont expanded and became a prime location for shipbuilding, fishing, and agricultural processing. It is reported that Ohio’s first sugar mill was located in Fremont. Originally known as Lower Sandusky, the town was renamed in honor of American explorer and politician John Charles Frémont in 1849.

One of Fremont’s biggest claims to fame is being the hometown of Rutherford B. Hayes, the 19th US president. Spiegel Grove, the estate of Rutherford and Lucy Hayes, is now a National Historic Landmark and the site of the couple’s grave. The property has become the Rutherford B. Hayes Presidential Center, a complex that includes Spiegel Grove, Rutherford B. Hayes Museum and Library, and residences from several generations of the Hayes family. Rutherford B. Hayes Center Library was the first presidential library in the United States.

Today, Kraft Heinz is a major driver of Fremont’s economy. The city’s Heinz plant has been operational since the 1930s and produces approximately 80% of all Heinz Ketchup. The facility was given federal grant funds earlier this year for improvements toward lowering carbon emissions. These upgrades were estimated to create 500 jobs across 10 of the company’s facilities.

Fremont's natural beauty is one of its most compelling features. The city is situated along the scenic Sandusky River, providing plenty of opportunities for fishing, kayaking, and canoeing. For those who prefer land-based activities, the city has numerous parks and nature preserves. Birchard Park, with its lush greenery and walking trails, is a local favorite and home to the annual Fremont Concert in the Park Series. Biggs-Kettner Memorial East Side Park includes a skate park, playground, sports fields, and the Fremont Community Recreation Complex that has indoor basketball and volleyball courts, a seasonal ice rink and a heated outdoor pool. Browse all of Fremont’s park offerings here.

The sense of community in Fremont is palpable. The city hosts numerous events and festivals throughout the year, fostering a strong sense of togetherness among residents. The annual Fremont Flea Market is a beloved tradition, attracting vendors and visitors from all over the region. The Sandusky County Fair, held every summer, is another highlight, featuring agricultural exhibits, live entertainment, and thrilling rides.

Fremont is also home to a thriving arts scene. The Fremont Community Theatre & Arts Center showcases local talent through a variety of performances, from classic plays to contemporary productions. The city's dedication to the arts is further evident in its public art installations and community art projects.

Fremont, Ohio, is a city that beautifully balances its rich historical heritage with a forward-thinking approach to community development. It serves as a reminder that small towns can have a massive impact. Whether you're exploring the past, enjoying the natural splendor of the Sandusky River, or participating in a vibrant community event, Fremont is a place to experience the best of the Midwest.
