How to Combat Allergens in the Home

Spring is here! While the warmer weather is a welcome change, it also means allergy season is in full swing. If you or your family suffer from allergies, you know how frustrating it can be to deal with constant sneezing, itchy eyes, and congestion— even inside your own home. Luckily, there are steps you can take to reduce allergens and create a healthier home environment.

1. keep your hvac in check

Your HVAC system plays a huge role in indoor air quality. Make sure to:

  • Change air filters every 1–3 months, using HEPA filters if possible.
  • Schedule regular HVAC maintenance to prevent dust and mold buildup.
  • Consider using an air purifier to trap allergens like pollen, dust mites, and pet dander.

2. dust and vacuum regularly

Dust and pet dander accumulate quickly, making regular cleaning essential. Here’s how to do it effectively:

  • Use a vacuum with a HEPA filter to trap allergens instead of recirculating them.
  • Dust surfaces with a damp cloth to prevent allergens from becoming airborne.
  • Don’t forget overlooked areas like ceiling fans, baseboards, and vents.

3. control humidity levels

Dust mites and mold thrive in humid environments, so keeping your home’s humidity under control is key:

  • Use a dehumidifier to maintain indoor humidity between 30–50%.
  • Fix leaks promptly to prevent mold growth.
  • Ensure proper ventilation in bathrooms and kitchens.

4. wash bedding and upholstery frequently

Bedding, curtains, and upholstered furniture trap allergens, so regular cleaning is a must:

  • Wash sheets, pillowcases, and blankets weekly.
  • Use allergen-proof covers on mattresses and pillows.
  • Clean upholstered furniture with a HEPA vacuum or steam cleaner.

5. choose allergy-friendly flooring and decor

Carpets and heavy drapes can trap allergens, so consider allergy-friendly alternatives:

  • Opt for hardwood, tile, or laminate flooring instead of carpet.
  • Use washable area rugs that can be cleaned frequently.
  • Swap out heavy curtains for blinds or machine-washable drapes.

6. minimize the spread

Many allergens are brought in from the outside, though some build up indoors. To reduce outdoor exposure:

  • Remove shoes before entering your home to avoid tracking in pollen and dirt.
  • Keep windows closed during high-pollen seasons and use air conditioning instead.
  • Bathe pets regularly and keep them off furniture if you have allergies to pet dander.

7. be mindful of indoor plants

While many plants improve air quality, some can contribute to indoor allergens:

  • Choose low-pollen houseplants that help to purify the air, such as snake or spider plants.
  • Avoid overwatering, which can encourage mold growth.
  • Wipe leaves regularly to remove dust buildup.

Taking these steps can make a big difference in reducing allergens and improving indoor air quality. Whether you’re preparing for allergy season or just want a cleaner, healthier home, these small changes can help you and your family breathe easier all year round!
