Radon Action Month: Protecting Your Home From This Harmful Gas

January is Radon Action Month, a time to raise awareness about the dangers of radon gas and take proactive steps to protect our homes and loved ones. Radon is a colorless, odorless gas that can seep into homes from the ground, posing a serious health risk due to its radioactive nature. Let’s explore what radon is, why it's a concern, and most importantly, how you can prevent its infiltration into your home.

where does radon come from?

Radon is a radioactive gas that naturally occurs as uranium in soil and rock breaks down. It becomes a health concern when it enters buildings and accumulates in enclosed spaces. Prolonged exposure to high levels of radon has been linked to lung cancer, making it the second leading cause of lung cancer after smoking.

testing for radon

The first step in safeguarding your home is to test for radon levels. Radon test kits are readily available and easy to use. They can be purchased online or at local hardware stores. Short-term tests provide a snapshot of radon levels over a few days, while long-term tests offer a more comprehensive understanding over several months. Conducting regular tests is crucial, especially in basements and lower levels of the home.

preventing radon infiltration

1. Seal cracks and openings: Radon can enter homes through cracks in the foundation, walls, and floors. Regularly inspect and seal any gaps with caulk or other appropriate sealants.
2. Ventilation: Ensure proper ventilation in your home. Good airflow helps prevent the buildup of radon. Consider using exhaust fans, especially in basements and crawl spaces.
3. Use radon-resistant construction techniques: If you're building a new home or renovating, consider implementing radon-resistant construction techniques. These may include installing a gas-permeable layer beneath the foundation and using a vent pipe system to redirect radon outside.
4. Install a radon mitigation system: In cases where radon levels are consistently high, installing a radon mitigation system becomes essential. This system uses a vent pipe and fan to draw radon from beneath the foundation and release it into the outdoor air. The EPA recommends installing a system if your radon level is at or above 4 picocuries per liter (pCi/L) of air. A “picocurie” is a unit for measuring the amount of radioactivity.
5. Professional assistance: For a comprehensive approach, enlist the services of a certified radon professional. They can conduct a thorough assessment of your home's radon levels and recommend appropriate mitigation strategies.

Radon Action Month reminds us to take precautions in protecting our homes from this invisible threat. Testing for radon, implementing preventive measures, and raising awareness are crucial steps in ensuring a safe and healthy living environment for ourselves and future generations.
