Wildwood Preserve is the most visited of all Toledo Metroparks. It spans an impressive 493 acres with varied terrains, diverse wildlife, and historic manmade structures. It’s the perfect place to escape into nature without leaving the city!
history
Wildwood was once the estate of Robert Stranahan, a founder and president of Champion Spark Plugs. In the 1970s, the land was nearly sold for residential development, but thanks to a dedicated community effort, it was preserved as a Metropark. Today, the Stranahan’s former residence, known as the Manor House and built in 1938, remains a well-preserved centerpiece of the park, offering tours and events throughout the year.
The grounds around the home were designed by renowned landscape architect Ellen Biddle Shipman. It is one of the last gardens that remains free and open to the public as an example of Shipman’s architecture. The park also features Oak Grove School, a one-room schoolhouse that was built in 1893 and moved a quarter-mile to its present location in 1998.

One of the biggest draws of Wildwood is its extensive trail system, which features an array of topography and difficulty levels. There are paved all-purpose trails, boardwalk and wooded trails, as well as floodplains bisecting the park at the Ottawa River. Whether you’re a casual stroller or an avid hiker, Wildwood has a peaceful path waiting for you.

With a name like Wildwood, it’s no surprise that the park offers unique opportunities for observing wildlife. It’s a prime spot for birdwatching, particularly ground-nesting birds that breed at the park such as rufous-sided towhees, field sparrows, and American woodcock. Northwest Ohio Birding Week is coming up in May and you can be sure that many birders will have eyes on Wildwood to catch a glimpse of northern migration! Additionally, the prairies at Wildwood offer stunning displays of wildflowers and prairie grasses.

At the park’s East Entrance, visitors will find the Mercy Health FitPark. This area has equipment designed for aerobics, muscle strengthening, and balance exercises.
The Wildwood Playground off the Main Entrance offers a forest theme with a large play structure, merry-go-round, and a multi-user disk swing. It also has accessibility features to ensure that everyone is welcome to join the fun.
