The Toledo area is made up of a handful of communities, each offering its own flavor. Bowling Green is one such community, and houses a population of just over 30,000 people, a variety of family-owned restaurants and independent coffee shops, scenic parks, historical sites, and of course, friendly people. The thriving downtown district make it a great place to call home, and residents love supporting the local Bowling Green State University, which hosts sporting and social events throughout the year. It’s impossible to experience everything Bowling Green has to offer in one day, but we’ve done our best to create an itinerary for a perfect day here. We believe that it showcases the best of the community, but of course leaves more to be explored. Whether you’re a local or just visiting from a nearby town, check out this list next time you need ideas for your weekend activities. 8 a.m. Start Your Morning at Flatlands Coffee

Flatlands Coffee is one of Bowling Green’s most treasured gems for caffeine-enthusiasts. The cozy, colorful shop front on Main Street opens up into a space with modern decor, perfect for settling down for a morning cup of joe. The staff here will whip up your choice of espresso bevvie with love, and educate you about the roasting and brewing process while they’re at it. 9 a.m. Grab a Pastry at Stimmel’s Market

Add a sweet note to your morning with a fresh pastry from Stimmel’s Market. And by fresh, we mean nothing in there is more than a few hours out of the oven or fryer. The market prides itself in its raised and cake donuts (which are some of the best in the Toledo area), but also makes savory sandwiches with boar’s head meat, which is much more delicious than it sounds. 10 a.m. Meander through the Shops on Main Street

Downtown Bowling Green is primarily comprised of the colorful shops and cafes lining Main Street. A day here wouldn’t be complete without popping in and seeing what these vendors have to offer! A few of our favorites include Coyote Beads and Jewelry, Finders Records and Ginny’s Fashions. 12 p.m. Lunch at Kermit’s Family Restaurant

Kermit’s is a no-frills, family-owned favorite in Bowling Green. Everything on the menu is under $10 (and some under $5), but that’s not for a lack of quality. Enjoy a medley of comforting salads and sandwiches, from a classic burger to the signature Kermit Melt. 1 p.m. Carter Historic Farm

After that hearty lunch, you’ll no doubt want to get a little walking in. The Carter Historic Farm is our next stop, and offers a taste of history through interactive programming and displays. The farm is an exhibit of depression-era living on a farm, and allows you to go back in time to experience what life was like in the 30s. It’s truly a treasured landmark in the area! 3 p.m. Grounds for Thought

Time for a mid-afternoon pick-me-up! Grounds for Thought is a coffee shop, coffee roaster, and used bookstore all in one, and is conveniently situated downtown. Pick a book from the sprawling shelves, and settle down at a table by the window to read with a comforting caffeinated drink. 4 p.m. Lounge in Simpson Garden Park
It’s time to sit back and relax! You’ve had a busy day so far. There’s no better way to wind down than with a leisurely stroll in the park. Simpson Garden Park is absolutely idyllic, offering well-kept greenery, brick walkways. the shade of mature trees, and gardens bursting with colorful flowers. If you’re feeling a little hungry, bring a small picnic to enjoy in the shade! But don’t fill up too much — dinner is next. 6:30 p.m. Dinner at Sam B’s
Sam B’s has been an area favorite since opening in 1972. In the more than 40 years, it has evolved into an upscale eatery featuring dishes like Maryland crab cakes, cranberry rum salmon, and mushroom fontina ravioli. The prices are higher, but well worth it! 9 p.m. Kosmic Bowling at Al-Mar Lanes

Okay, we realize this is a bit cheesy. But bowling in Bowling Green just seems too perfect too leave out of the agenda. Plus, Al-Mar Lanes is one of the best alleys in the area, offering glow-in-the-dark bowling, fun music, and fun for the whole family. Glow bowling (or kosmic bowling), runs from 9 p.m. to midnight on the weekends! Can’t Get Enough of Bowling Green?
