Woodville, Ohio, named after Congressman Amos E. Wood, was platted in 1836. This intimate village was once a midpoint on the Maumee and Western Reserve Turnpike— referred to back then as the “Old Mud Pike” due to the route’s thick mud. It was the first permanent passage across the Black Swamp and later became US Route 20. Modern-day Woodville remains a convergence for major roadways as it’s the point at which US 20 crosses the Portage River, and State Route 105 passes through the village.

Woodville has deservedly been nicknamed the “Lime Center of the World” because it sits on the center of a huge deposit of dolomitic limestone. Several quarries operate in and around the village, making lime production a driving economic force in Woodville.

For those who love the outdoors, Woodville does not disappoint. The Portage River is a central feature, offering scenic beauty and recreational opportunities. Whether you’re interested in kayaking, fishing, or simply enjoying a peaceful walk along the riverbanks, the Portage River is a natural treasure. The river also plays a vital role in annual community events, such as the Portage River Festival, which celebrates the area’s connection to the waterway with parades, live music, and local food.

The town offers picturesque parks, trails, and plenty of activities. Trail Marker Park, Trail Marker Disc Golf Course, and the Woodville Community Pool are all located along the Portage River. Veterans Park, also known as Waterworks Park due to the presence of the water treatment plant and water tower, was the former site of Woodville Public Schools. H.W. Busdiecker Park features 14 flagpoles dedicated to NASA astronauts who perished in the line of duty. Limelight Eagle Park is situated on Main Street at the site of the former Limelight Theater.

Woodville, Ohio, may be small, but it is a town with a big heart. Whether you're exploring its historical landmarks, enjoying the natural beauty of the Portage River, or participating in community events, you'll find that Woodville embodies the best of small-town America. It's a place where history, nature, and community come together to create a truly special place to live or visit.
