May is National Bike Month, and who doesn't need fresh air and a change of pace right now? Our area has an abundance of bike paths — many of which connect to regional trails.
The University/Parks Trail is 6.3 miles laid out between the University of Toledo campus and King Road in Sylvania. It connects to the Wildwood trails and has designated road access to Olander Park, Ottawa Park, and the Franklin Park Mall.
The Towpath Trail connects to three Metroparks and follows the Miami and Erie Canal. Farnsworth, Bend View, and Providence are all accessible, providing a total round trip of 18 miles.
The Chessie Circle is located in South Toledo. The trail starts near Beverly Elementary School and continues onto River Road. It's currently 1.5 miles but there are plans to extend it another 11 miles to UT campuses.
The Wabash Cannonball Trail is one of the largest bike paths in the state of Ohio. At 64 miles long, it passes through four counties. The North Fork stretches between Maumee and Montpelier, coming within 15 miles of the Indiana border. It also connects to the Oak Openings trail. The South Fork runs between Maumee and Liberty Center and passes through the Maumee State Forest. The Wabash Cannonball also links to the Fallen Timbers Battlefield and Sidecut Metropark.
The City of Luna Pier's public beach offers bike trails along its 4.5 mile Lake Erie shoreline. Also located in Monroe County, Michigan is the Sterling State Park which has a 3.7 mile looped bike path.
The Blanchard River Greenway Bike Path stretches from Broad Avenue to Main Street in Hancock County. The trail is roughly 3 miles roundtrip with plans to extend in the coming year.
