Winter storms tend to hit the Midwest hard, sometimes with little warning. As temperatures drop and snow piles up, being prepared can make a world of difference in safely managing harsh winter conditions. Stock up, know how to properly use your supplies, and take extra precautions!

ESSENTIAL SUPPLIES
Severe weather can lead to power outages, icy roads, and limited access to stores. Make sure you’re ready for major snowfall with these key items.

SHOVELS OR SNOWBLOWERS

Reliable snow-removal tools are a must. Keep at least one sturdy shovel on hand, and if you have a large driveway, consider investing in a snowblower to save time and physical strain.

SALT OR ICE MELT

Prevent slips and falls by treating your porch, steps, driveway, and sidewalks with salt or ice melt. This reduces dangerous ice buildup and makes navigating much safer.

NONPERISHABLE FOODS

In the event that travel becomes unsafe or the power goes out, you’ll want food that doesn’t require refrigeration. Stock up on canned goods, granola bars, peanut butter, crackers, and other shelf-stable items.

WATER

Have at least one gallon of water available per person per day for a minimum of three days. This ensures you have enough for drinking, cooking, and basic hygiene if plumbing issues arise.

BATTERIES

In case of power interruptions, extra batteries will allow you to keep flashlights, radios, and essential devices powered when you need them most.

CANDLES

Candles offer a reliable light source during outages. Keep them on sturdy surfaces away from anything flammable. Never leave them unattended or within reach of pets or children.

POWER BANKS

Portable chargers are incredibly helpful for keeping phones, tablets, and small devices powered when the electricity is out. Charge them ahead of storms so you’re not stuck without communication.

GENERATORS

A generator can keep your home warm through prolonged outages. If you don’t have the funds for a whole house generator, consider investing in one with enough power for crucial appliances. Ensure it’s properly maintained and always operated outdoors to prevent carbon monoxide poisoning.

FIREWOOD

For homes with wood-burning fireplaces or stoves, having dry, seasoned firewood on hand can provide comfort if your main heating system fails.

SAFETY TIPS

Stocking up is only half the battle. Here are further steps to help protect your home and family during severe winter weather.

KEEP HEAT INSIDE

Check windows and doors for drafts and seal any gaps with weatherstripping or insulation tape. Heavy curtains also help retain heat.

PREPARE YOUR PIPES

Frozen pipes are a costly winter hazard. Insulate your plumbing, let faucets drip during extreme cold, and keep cabinet doors open to allow warm air to circulate around pipes.

MAINTAIN HEATING SOURCES

Schedule annual service for your furnace, change filters regularly, and clean chimneys if you use a fireplace or wood stove.

FOLLOW SAFE GENERATOR PRACTICES

Always run generators outside, away from windows or doors. Never operate them in enclosed areas.

AVOID OVEREXERTION

Shoveling snow is physically demanding. Take frequent breaks, push rather than lift when possible, and try to find help if you have health concerns.

STAY INFORMED

Use battery-powered radios or weather apps to stay updated on storm alerts, road conditions, and emergency advisories.

CREATE AN EMERGENCY PLAN

Make sure all family members know what to do in a power outage, where supplies are stored, and how to contact each other or emergency services.

Winter weather can be unpredictable, but you don't have to leave your safety to chance. By gathering the right supplies and taking proactive steps, you can handle severe cold fronts and blizzards with peace of mind. Do the prep work ahead of time to keep your household safe, warm, and well-equipped all season long.
