Prepping Your Home for Fall: Essential Maintenance Tips for a Cozy Season

The sun is setting on the summer of 2025. Whether you’re mourning these final days or eagerly awaiting the start of fall, one thing is certain: it’s time to get your house in order. With cooler temperatures and unpredictable weather ahead, taking the time to prepare your home can help prevent mishaps and costly repairs. A little groundwork now can make a big difference throughout the fall and winter seasons.

last chance to divide perennials

Many perennial plants do best when divided and transplanted in the spring, but there’s still time to get your greenery adapted to a new home if necessary. It’s recommended to divide plants at least 6 weeks before the first frost so they have adequate time to become established. Make sure to keep your newly divided plants well-watered through the remainder of the growing season.

seal windows and doors

Gaps and cracks around windows and doors allow cold air to seep in, making your heating system work harder and increasing your energy bills. By properly sealing these areas, you can prevent drafts, reduce heat loss, and keep your home cozy throughout the colder months. Additionally, sealing helps protect against moisture infiltration, which can lead to mold growth and structural damage over time. A well-sealed home is not only more comfortable but also more cost-effective and durable in the long run.

inspect roof and gutters

The roof is your first line of defense against harsh winter weather. Checking for missing shingles, leaks, or other damage can help you address issues before they worsen under the weight of snow and ice. Similarly, clearing and inspecting gutters is essential to prevent clogs that can lead to water overflow and ice dams. Ice dams occur when water trapped by clogged gutters freezes and expands, potentially causing leaks and wood rot.

evaluate fireplaces and chimneys

Over time, creosote, a highly flammable residue, can build up inside chimneys, increasing the risk of chimney fires. A professional chimney sweep can help to identify and remove this buildup, as well as any blockages like bird nests or debris that could obstruct proper ventilation. An inspection can also uncover structural issues, such as cracks or loose bricks, that may allow dangerous gasses or water to seep into your home. Before you cozy up next to the fire this winter, it’s crucial to make sure your fireplace is operating safely and efficiently.

maintain the perfect temp all season long

If your HVAC is overdue for servicing, now is the time to have it checked out. Don’t forget to change your furnace filter. You should also switch the direction of your ceiling fans to pull air upwards and change the settings on programmable thermostats as the temperature begins to drop.

Don’t procrastinate when it comes to preparing your home for chilly nights. Future you will be glad these items were addressed early!
