WHY MAINTENANCE MATTERS
A fireplace isn’t just a decorative feature—it’s part of your home’s heating and ventilation system. Before using your fireplace, you need to plan for yearly inspections, regular cleanings, and structural monitoring to mitigate risks like smoke damage, poor ventilation, and fires.
Soot buildup and creosote (a highly flammable byproduct of burning wood) are major culprits behind chimney fires. According to the National Fire Protection Association, three out of every ten house fires caused by heating are due to poorly maintained fireplaces and dirty chimneys. The EPA reports that over 2 million of the nation’s wood stoves are inefficient, uncertified devices.
BEFORE LIGHTING IT UP
- Schedule a professional chimney sweep and inspection.
- Make sure the chimney cap, flashing, and crown aren’t susceptible to water leaks.
- Test the damper to ensure it opens and closes as intended.
DURING THE SEASON

- Unusual drafts or back-drafting, meaning cold air is entering and your fire may struggle to stay lit, suggests poor airflow. This can be caused by blockages, a damaged flue liner, or improper chimney sizing.
- Visible flames coming from the top of the chimney or soot/creosote flakes on the roof or ground are signs of a chimney fire. These are often fast-burning and require immediate evacuation.
